Copenhagen (Diplomat.so) – Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has urged U.S. President Donald Trump to stop making statements about taking over Greenland, saying such remarks contradict international law and undermine relations between close allies.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Frederiksen said there was no justification for the United States to annex Greenland, a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. She stressed that no country has the right to take control of another and that Greenland’s status is not open to negotiation.
Her comments followed an interview with The Atlantic magazine in which Trump reiterated his view that Greenland is strategically important to the United States, citing defense considerations.
Concerns in Denmark have been heightened by recent global developments, prompting officials to emphasize respect for sovereignty and alliance commitments. Frederiksen called on Washington to halt what she described as threats toward Denmark and Greenland, noting that Greenland’s people have repeatedly said the territory is not for sale.
Greenland’s Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, also criticized a social media post by Katie Miller, the wife of Trump’s deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, which showed Greenland depicted in U.S. flag colors with the word "SOON.” Nielsen described the post as disrespectful but said there was no reason for panic, reaffirming that Greenland’s future would not be decided through social media.
Denmark’s ambassador to the United States, Jesper Moeller Soerensen, said Copenhagen expects full respect for Denmark’s territorial integrity, adding that Denmark has strengthened its Arctic security efforts and continues to work closely with the United States as a NATO ally.
Trump has repeatedly expressed interest in Greenland, citing its strategic location between Europe and North America and its mineral resources. Greenland’s prime minister’s office did not immediately comment on Trump’s latest remarks.
