Cairo (Diplomat.so) - Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi reaffirmed Egypt's "firm and unwavering" support for the Federal Republic of Somalia's territorial integrity during a joint press conference in Cairo on Sunday, following high-level talks with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
The meeting marks a new phase of intensified diplomatic engagement between the two countries amid rising regional tensions in the Horn of Africa.

El-Sisi said the visit reflected the "depth and uniqueness” of Egypt–Somalia relations, referencing the strategic partnership announced during Mohamud’s 2025 visit to Cairo. He stressed that Egypt "categorically rejects any measures that infringe upon Somalia’s unity,” calling external recognition of separatist region "a grave violation of the UN Charter and international law.” The statement comes as Somalia continues to push back against moves challenging its sovereignty.

According to remarks delivered at the palace briefing, both leaders reviewed expanded cooperation in economic development, trade, and transport connectivity, with El-Sisi highlighting opportunities created by streamlined air and maritime links. He also announced that Egypt will dispatch a multidisciplinary medical mission to Somalia in the coming period, alongside new programs for capacity-building and professional training through the Egyptian Agency of Partnership for Development.

On security, El-Sisi confirmed Egypt’s readiness to share counterterrorism expertise, calling strong national institutions "essential for creating conditions for long-term stability.” He further noted that Egypt is finalizing the deployment of its contingent to the African Union Transition Mission’s successor mission, underscoring Cairo’s commitment to Somalia’s stabilization efforts.

Both presidents also discussed the wider geopolitical landscape, agreeing to deepen coordination on Red Sea and Gulf of Aden security, which El-Sisi said remains "the sole responsibility of the littoral states.”
