Tehran (Diplomat.so) – Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) conducted the 88th wave of missile strikes targeting United States and Israeli positions in the Persian Gulf on Wednesday, marking another phase of retaliatory actions amid escalating regional tensions.
The IRGC reported that its naval missile batteries and explosive drones struck what it described as enemy positions in international waters, claiming significant damage to both maritime and temporary military installations. "We have delivered exact and heavy blows to enemy targets,” said Brigadier General Hassan Ramezani, an IRGC spokesperson, during a televised briefing. The military statement included images and quotations from the late former Turkish Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan, highlighting the phrase, "Israel does not understand; it must be spoken to with force,” linking Iran’s response to a historical narrative of resistance.

In response to Israeli attacks on Iranian infrastructure, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned what he called the "open and unashamed” bombing of a major pharmaceutical company, warning that Israel’s officials would face "severe punishment at the hands of Iran’s IRGC.” Araghchi emphasized that the ongoing conflict is "a war of choice imposed by US and Israeli aggression” and reiterated Iran’s position that the attacks on its territory were not self-initiated.

Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian said that the Strait of Hormuz has been effectively closed to vessels linked to the aggressor parties, asserting that any foreign intervention under any pretext would result in "grave consequences.” Pezeshkian’s statements, delivered at a national security council session, underscore Tehran’s strategic posture amid the intensifying crisis.

Eyewitnesses along southern Iranian ports reported heightened naval activity before dawn on Wednesday, with fast attack craft observed preparing for coordinated sorties. One local port worker, speaking on condition of anonymity, noted, "There was a sense of urgency and preparation distinct from routine patrols.” Observers indicated that the ongoing military mobilization has disrupted regular shipping operations in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil exports.

Maritime analysts say that repeated Iranian missile waves, combined with threats to key energy chokepoints, have heightened regional instability and placed additional pressure on international shipping and oil markets. Historical context shows that previous waves of missile attacks and retaliatory strikes in the Persian Gulf have amplified both diplomatic tensions and economic uncertainty, particularly for countries dependent on Gulf oil exports.

The 88th wave of missile strikes represents a continuation of Iran’s strategy to respond forcefully to perceived aggression, signaling to both domestic and international audiences its resolve and capability to protect strategic interests in the region.
