Mogadishu (Diplomat.so) - The Council of Ministers of the Federal Republic of Somalia has announced the cancellation of all agreements between Somalia and the United Arab Emirates, citing constitutional authority and the need to protect national sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.
In a statement issued after a cabinet meeting, the government said the decision applies to all agreements concluded with the UAE, including those involving federal institutions, affiliated bodies, and regional administrations within Somalia. It also covers cooperation related to the ports of Berbera, Bosaso, and Kismayo.
The cabinet further confirmed the annulment of bilateral security and defense cooperation agreements between the two governments.
According to the statement, the decision follows what the government described as reports and evidence of actions that it says undermine Somalia’s sovereignty, national unity, and political independence. The government said such actions are inconsistent with principles of sovereignty and non-interference outlined in international and regional charters, including those of the United Nations, African Union, Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the Arab League.
The cabinet instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to formally notify the UAE of the decision and to coordinate its implementation. The ministry has also been tasked with informing international and regional partners, including the African Union and the United Nations.
The government said it remains open to international cooperation based on mutual respect, recognition of Somalia’s unity and sovereignty, and adherence to constitutional and international principles. It added that the decision was taken in what it described as the national interest.
