Khartoum (Diplomat.so) - Local Investigation Police arrested three suspects in Wadi Halfa, Northern State, on Sunday, August 23, after finding narcotics, including 270 Nervax tablets and 52 bango cannabis units.
Authorities said officers also recovered an unspecified amount of cash during the operation. The information provided by local officials did not identify the suspects, disclose the precise location of the arrests or specify whether formal charges had been filed.
Abu Obeida Mirghani Burhan, executive director of Wadi Halfa locality and chairman of its security committee, said the committee had ordered security bodies to intensify efforts against narcotics trafficking and distribution.
"The security committee has stressed intensifying security efforts to combat drugs and apprehend dealers and promoters,” Burhan said, describing the campaign as part of the locality’s stated objective of moving toward what authorities call "Halfa Zero Drugs.”
Burhan said cooperation between uniformed security agencies, community police, residents and neighborhood-level popular resistance committees would be important to efforts to curb narcotics distribution. He called for coordinated action aimed at identifying distribution networks and restricting supplies entering local communities.
The executive director also pointed to Wadi Halfa’s position near Sudan’s northern international frontier as an additional security challenge. The locality lies close to the Egyptian border and serves as an important movement and commercial corridor, making border monitoring a significant component of local security operations.
"Halfa’s particular status as a border locality imposes additional security challenges that require greater efforts,” Burhan said, adding that authorities were seeking to prevent the area from being used for drug smuggling or distribution.
Local authorities also urged residents to report suspected narcotics dealers and users, arguing that community information could assist investigators in identifying suppliers and wider distribution networks. No independent figures on the prevalence of narcotics use in the locality were included in the information released about the operation.
The operation comes as Wadi Halfa’s border location places local authorities at the intersection of policing, cross-border movement and community security. Officials have presented closer coordination between law-enforcement bodies and residents as a central element of their anti-narcotics strategy.
Further details about judicial proceedings against the three suspects were not immediately available. The case is expected to move through the relevant investigative procedures, with any determination of criminal responsibility subject to Sudanese law and the competent judicial authorities.
