Mogadishu (Diplomat.so) - The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, met the United Kingdom's State Minister for International Development in the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, Kirsty McNeill, at Villa Somalia in Mogadishu on Tuesday, August 25, to discuss shared priorities and strengthening Somalia-UK bilateral cooperation.
The talks at the presidential palace focused on areas of mutual interest and opportunities to deepen cooperation between Somalia and the United Kingdom, according to information released by the Somali presidency. The meeting reflected continued high-level engagement between Mogadishu and London on bilateral priorities.
The Somali presidency said the government and people of Somalia deeply value the United Kingdom as a key partner in the country’s progress. The information released following the meeting did not identify new agreements, financial commitments or specific initiatives resulting from the discussions.
McNeill’s responsibilities within the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office include international development, placing development policy at the center of her engagement with Somalia and other international partners. Her meeting with President Mohamud comes amid continuing British diplomatic and development engagement with Somalia.
The United Kingdom has maintained longstanding relations with Somalia and has supported initiatives addressing development and humanitarian priorities. Cooperation between Mogadishu and London has also extended to governance, institutional development and issues connected to Somalia’s wider stabilization efforts.
Somalia continues to face significant development pressures, including the effects of recurring climate shocks, displacement and humanitarian needs.
