Kitui (Diplomat.so) - Kenya's National Police Service recovered an illegal firearm and arrested one suspect in Lower Yatta, Kitui County, on Tuesday, August 18, following a public tip-off.
Police officers based at Kiusyani Police Station carried out the operation after receiving information from members of the public about the suspected illegal firearm, according to information released by the National Police Service.

The officers responded to the report and recovered the weapon before taking the suspect into custody. Police did not disclose the suspect’s identity or provide details about the type, condition or origin of the firearm.

The suspect was escorted to Kiusyani Police Station, where police said the individual remained in custody pending processing and arraignment before a court. The recovered firearm was secured as an exhibit for use in the case.

The National Police Service credited members of the public with providing information that enabled officers to respond to the incident, describing their actions as an example of civic responsibility and cooperation with law enforcement.

"The National Police Service commends members of the public for their bravery and civic duty in reporting the matter,” the police said in their statement, linking the response to its broader commitment to community policing and public safety.

No injuries were reported in the information provided about the operation, and police did not indicate whether investigators were pursuing additional suspects or examining whether the recovered weapon had been connected to other incidents.

The recovery highlights the role of community-generated information in police operations involving unlawfully held firearms. Reports from residents can provide officers with information needed to identify suspected weapons and individuals before further security incidents occur.

Lower Yatta is a sub-county within Kitui County in eastern Kenya, where local police stations form part of the National Police Service’s frontline structure for responding to criminal complaints, conducting investigations and maintaining public order.

Diplomat News Network could not independently establish further details about the circumstances in which the firearm was discovered or whether ballistic or forensic examination had begun. Police had also not provided additional information identifying the weapon’s make or calibre in the material available for this report.

The case is expected to proceed through the criminal justice process following police processing and the suspect’s anticipated court appearance. The firearm will remain secured as an exhibit as authorities handle the investigation and subsequent legal proceedings.

Police reiterated the importance of cooperation between communities and law-enforcement officers, saying public reporting supports community policing efforts and contributes to public safety in Kitui County.
