Kaduna (Diplomat.so) - The Kaduna State Police Command in Nigeria rescued 75 kidnapped travellers in Birnin Gwari, Kaduna State, after an operation launched following their abduction on Wednesday, August 19.
The travellers, including men, women and children, had been riding in commercial buses when armed men intercepted them near Folwaya Village at about 5:30 p.m., according to the Kaduna State Police Command. The gunmen, carrying AK-47 rifles and other weapons, moved the captives into surrounding forest and concealed them in a cave in mountainous terrain.
Kaduna State Police Public Relations Officer Mansir Hassan said in a statement on Friday that the operation began after the Birnin Gwari branch of the National Union of Road Transport Workers alerted authorities to the abduction.
"Upon receipt of the information, a crack team from the Birnin Gwari Area Command was immediately deployed to the location,” Hassan said.
Police said officers reached the area and confronted the security threat, prompting the kidnappers to abandon the captives and escape into the forest. All 75 travellers were recovered unharmed, according to Hassan.
"On sighting the well-armed police operatives, the abductors fled, abandoning their captives, who were successfully rescued unharmed,” he said.
The circumstances described by police highlight the security difficulties surrounding travel through parts of Birnin Gwari, where extensive forests and mountainous terrain can complicate searches and provide concealment for armed groups. The area has faced repeated kidnappings, armed attacks and threats to rural communities and road users.
Kaduna State Commissioner of Police Rabiu Muhammad credited the NURTW branch with providing information that enabled officers to respond quickly. He also commended the Birnin Gwari Area Commander and personnel involved in the rescue.
Muhammad urged residents to report suspicious movements promptly rather than attempting to confront suspected criminals themselves. "Members of the public should remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious movements or activities to the police,” he said.
The rescue illustrates the operational importance of cooperation between transport workers, local communities and Nigerian security agencies along vulnerable routes. Information supplied by people familiar with local roads and passenger movements can provide authorities with early warning of attacks and help narrow search areas.
Diplomat News Network notes that Birnin Gwari’s geography and transport links have made security along the corridor particularly important for passengers and communities dependent on road travel and commerce.
Police did not announce any arrests in connection with the abduction. Authorities said the recovery of the travellers demonstrated how rapid intelligence-sharing and deployment can improve the chances of safely locating kidnapping victims in difficult terrain.
