Bamako (Diplomat.so) – Mali's General Staff of the Armed Forces said it carried out a series of air operations in December aimed at securing key roads and disrupting armed group networks across several regions of the country.
According to a statement reported by the Africa 360 news website, the operations began on December 12 in the Timbuktu region with an offensive reconnaissance mission. The military said three suspected militants were neutralized and various equipment was recovered, strengthening intelligence capabilities and helping to identify sensitive areas for potential future operations to prevent armed group concentrations and protect civilians.
The statement said four sites were targeted, including a position in Dioula northeast of Sandaré, two locations north of Lakamané, and another west of Sandari. The strikes were described as part of efforts to weaken the logistical capabilities of armed groups.
Additional airstrikes were also carried out north and northeast of the Sikasso region, destroying three further targets. The military said the operations relied on continuous monitoring of armed group movements to maintain control on the ground and reduce pressure on neighboring areas.
The General Staff reiterated its commitment to protecting civilians and continuing counterterrorism operations nationwide during Mali’s ongoing military-led transition. It praised the participating units for their professionalism and called on citizens to remain vigilant and support security efforts.
The statement added that Mali’s stability is closely linked to effective control of border areas, stressing that sustained operations will be necessary to prevent the return of armed group strongholds. It also called for stronger cooperation with local authorities and economic stakeholders, alongside enhanced long-term coordination among security institutions to ensure durable security gains.
