Addis Ababa (Diplomat.so) - The African Union convened on Friday its Sixth A3 High-Level Meeting at its headquarters in Addis Ababa, calling for a more cohesive and strategically assertive African presence within the United Nations Security Council as global geopolitical tensions reshape multilateral diplomacy.
Held on the margins of the 39th Ordinary Session of the AU Assembly, the meeting centered on the theme "African Agency and Leadership in Peace and Security in a Changing Global Order.” According to official communiqués and on-the-record remarks reviewed by Diplomat News Network (diplomat.so), discussions focused on strengthening the A3 bloc as an independent strategic mechanism guided by African priorities and enhancing its proactive influence in Security Council deliberations.
The session was chaired by Abdisalam Abdi Ali, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Federal Republic of Somalia and A3 Coordinator, who emphasized the importance of collective positioning. "Africa’s effectiveness in New York depends on coordination and clarity of purpose,” he stated during the opening segment.
Bankole Adeoye, AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, congratulated newly elected A3 members to the African seats on the Council. He underscored the need for unity and reiterated calls for predictable and sustainable financing for AU-led peace support operations authorized by the UN.
Participating officials included Liberia’s Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti, the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Deputy Foreign Minister Noëlla Ayeganagato Nakwipone, and the AU’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Mohamed Idris.
Policy analysts note that the renewed emphasis on A3 coordination aligns with broader African demands for institutional reform and equitable representation within global governance structures.
