Dakar (Diplomat.so) - Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has announced significant financial rewards and land grants for members of the national football team following their 1–0 victory over Morocco in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final.
Under the presidential decree, each of the 28 players will receive approximately $135,000 in bonuses and a 1,500-square-metre plot of coastal land. The combined value of the rewards for players is estimated at $3.7 million. Football federation officials and members of the wider delegation are also set to benefit from additional cash payments and land allocations.
The decision has been welcomed by many supporters as recognition of the team’s achievement and its unifying effect on the country. Celebrations erupted in Dakar and other cities after the final, with large crowds gathering to welcome the players home.
However, the scale of the rewards has also sparked public debate. Senegal is facing growing fiscal pressures, with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) estimating public debt at 132% of GDP. A $1.8 billion IMF support programme remains on hold, raising concerns among economists and civil society groups about government spending priorities.
Government officials have defended the decision, arguing that sporting success plays an important role in national cohesion and international visibility, while critics have called for greater focus on social services and economic reforms.
