Mogadishu (diplomat.so) - Former Somali President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, who is preparing for the upcoming presidential election, has voiced his opposition to the ongoing discussions within the National Consultative Council (NCC), which is chaired by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and includes the presidents of Somalia's federal member states, as the council is currently considering extending the terms of state presidents whose mandates have expired.
Sharif expressed concerns that these discussions could also lead to a proposal to extend President Mohamud’s term beyond its official end on May 15, 2026. He warned that such a move would raise serious concerns about the legitimacy of the political process in Somalia.

Sharif Sheikh Ahmed emphasized the importance of adhering to the Somali constitution and relevant laws, asserting that the legitimacy of political positions comes from respecting the legal mandate, and reiterated his strong stance against any form of term extension, suggesting that such actions undermine the principles of governance in Somalia.
