Tel Aviv (diplomat.so) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sharply criticized French President Emmanuel Macron and other Western leaders on Saturday for suggesting an arms embargo on Israel in response to its airstrikes against Hamas in Gaza. Netanyahu described their stance as a betrayal of civilized values, calling on the global community to support Israel in its fight against what he termed "forces of barbarism" led by Iran.
In a statement, Netanyahu condemned the calls for the embargo, singling out Macron and accusing Western nations of hypocrisy. "As Israel fights the forces of barbarism led by Iran, all civilized countries should be standing firmly by Israel’s side, yet President Macron and other Western leaders are now calling for arms embargoes against Israel. Shame on them," he said, asserting that Iran, in contrast, continues to arm groups like Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthis.
Netanyahu went further, calling their actions "a disgrace," but affirmed that Israel would prevail regardless of external support. "Israel will win with or without their support, but their shame will continue long after the war is won," he said. The Israeli leader also emphasized that the fight against terrorist groups such as Hamas was part of a broader struggle to protect global peace and security.
The Israeli Prime Minister’s comments came after Macron announced that France would cease sending arms to Israel but would continue providing missile defense systems. Macron stressed the need for a return to diplomacy and a halt to military escalation in Gaza, underscoring the civilian toll of the conflict.
Meanwhile, Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) reported a successful operation dismantling a Hezbollah underground command complex in Lebanon. The U.S. continues to supply arms to Israel, though President Joe Biden has voiced concerns about Israel’s approach to the Gaza conflict, repeatedly calling for a cease-fire while maintaining military support.
