Mogadishu (Diplomat.so) - Hormuud Telecom, Somalia's leading telecommunications provider, reported the destruction of one of its key communications towers in Dhuyac‑garoon, Lower Juba region, southern Somalia. The company alleges the tower was deliberately targeted, echoing a similar attack on its infrastructure in January 2019.
The loss of the tower and associated equipment has left between 20,000 and 30,000 residents without mobile or internet services, cutting off communication, financial transactions, and access to vital information. Hormuud said the outage has "severely disrupted daily life, business, and humanitarian aid efforts in a region already struggling with drought and economic hardship.”

"This is not just a loss of infrastructure; it’s a disruption to the lives and livelihoods of thousands,” Hormuud stated, highlighting the importance of connectivity for emergency support, trade, and social services.

The company reaffirmed its commitment to restoring services as quickly as possible but warned that repeated attacks on telecommunications infrastructure pose a serious challenge to sustaining essential services in southern Somalia.
