Washington (Diplomat.so) - Former U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris on Monday criticized President Donald Trump's approach to Venezuela in a post on her official account on X, saying his actions did not make the United States safer, stronger, or more affordable for American families.
In the post, Harris said that while Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro is a widely condemned authoritarian leader, this assessment does not justify policies she described as unlawful and unwise. She warned that past efforts aimed at regime change or resource-driven interventions, often presented as demonstrations of strength, have resulted in instability and long-term costs borne by Americans.
Harris argued that the American public does not support such actions and expressed concern over what she described as misleading justifications. She said the policy was not primarily about combating drugs or advancing democracy, but rather about oil interests and projecting regional power.
She also criticized what she called inconsistencies in Trump’s record, including decisions she said weakened Venezuela’s recognized opposition while engaging with figures connected to the Maduro government.
According to Harris, the approach put U.S. troops at risk, required billions of dollars in spending, and destabilized the region without clear legal authority, an exit strategy, or measurable benefits at home. She concluded by calling for leadership focused on lowering costs for working families, upholding the rule of law, strengthening alliances, and prioritizing the American people.
