Islamabad (Diplomat.so) - Sheikh Tahir Ashrafi, the special envoy of Pakistan's prime minister for Islamic affairs and chairman of the Pakistan Ulema Council (PUC), has commented on remarks attributed to the Somali president regarding Somaliland, calling for a unified response from Muslim-majority countries.
In a statement, Ashrafi said the remarks point to what he described as a "malicious Zionist conspiracy” aimed at fragmenting Somalia and weakening the unity of the Islamic world. He alleged that the idea of Somaliland’s independence serves external interests and forms part of a broader plan to divide Muslim nations.

Ashrafi urged Muslim-majority countries to take what he described as a firm and coordinated position on the issue, calling on the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to lead collective efforts.

Ashrafi was appointed on January 2, 2026, by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif as the special envoy for Islamic affairs and coordinator for religious harmony and the Pakistani diaspora in the Middle East and other Muslim-majority countries.
