Mogadishu (Diplomat.so) - Somali security officials confirmed that unidentified gunmen and assailants carried out two coordinated attacks targeting government employees in Mogadishu's Wadajir and Waaberi districts on Monday, October 25, 2021.
The first attack occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. in the Timo Adde area of Wadajir district, where armed men opened fire on Mohamed Dhaqane, a Somali Police Force officer assigned to tax security operations, and his wife, Rahma Ali Dhere, an employee of the Banadir Regional Administration. According to police sources, the couple had just disembarked from a motorized rickshaw when the attackers struck. Dhaqane was killed at the scene, while his wife and the driver, identified as Mustaf Ganey, sustained injuries and were transported to Madina Hospital for treatment.
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene following the shooting. "We heard multiple gunshots in quick succession, and people immediately ran for cover,” said Abdirahman Nur, a local resident. "The attackers fled quickly before security forces arrived.”
Approximately 30 minutes later, at around 9:00 p.m., a second attack targeted a residential house in the Maajo area of Waberi district using a hand grenade. The house belonged to Ikran Mohamud Yusuf, also known as Ikran Haydar, an employee of the Ministry of Public Works, Reconstruction and Housing. While Ikraan survived the blast, her husband, Abdinajib "Abdi Madoobe,” a sanitation worker in Waberi district, and one of their young children were injured. Both victims were rushed to Recep Tayyip Erdogan Training and Research Hospital for emergency care.
A neighbor, who requested partial anonymity due to security concerns, told that the explosion shook nearby homes. "The blast was loud, and we saw smoke rising from the house. Residents rushed to help before ambulances arrived,” the witness said.
Security officials stated that preliminary investigations indicate both attacks were deliberate and targeted. The militant group Al-Shabaab later claimed responsibility, consistent with its pattern of targeting government personnel and civilians associated with public institutions in the capital.
Mogadishu has experienced persistent security challenges, as insurgent groups frequently carrying out assassinations and bombings aimed at undermining government authority and public confidence. Analysts note that such attacks often occur in residential neighborhoods, increasing risks to civilians.
"These incidents highlight the continued vulnerability of public servants, even in populated districts,” said Hassan Abdullahi, a security analyst based in Mogadishu. "The targeting of families underscores the broader psychological impact intended by these operations.”
Authorities have not announced any arrests related to the attacks, but police say investigations are ongoing as part of wider efforts to counter urban insurgency threats in the capital.
