Cairo (Diplomat.so) - Egypt has welcomed a letter from U.S. President Donald Trump recognizing the country's role in promoting regional peace and stability. In a statement, the Egyptian President said he appreciated Trump's efforts to strengthen peace at both regional and international levels, as well as his recognition of Egypt's pivotal role in supporting security across the Middle East and Africa.
The Egyptian leader also highlighted the Nile River’s central importance for Egypt, describing it as the lifeline of the Egyptian people. He emphasized that Egypt remains committed to serious and constructive cooperation with other Nile Basin countries, based on international law and principles that ensure shared benefits without harming any party.
In his letter to President Trump, the Egyptian President conveyed his thanks, reaffirmed Cairo’s position on water security, expressed support for U.S. efforts to mediate regional disputes, and expressed his aspiration to continue close collaboration with Washington in the coming phase.
Under the 1959 Nile Waters Agreement, Egypt receives 55.5 billion cubic meters of water annually, while Sudan receives 18.5 billion cubic meters from an average flow of 84 billion cubic meters, after accounting for evaporation. These allocations remain in effect even as disputes continue with other Nile Basin countries, particularly Ethiopia, which has constructed the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
Ethiopia maintains that the dam is crucial for its energy production and economic development. Addis Ababa has said the dam’s operations are designed to regulate water flow and reduce flooding, and has repeatedly emphasized its sovereign right to utilize the Nile while advocating negotiated solutions that balance development and downstream water security.
