Addis Ababa (Diplomat.so) - The African Union Commission has congratulated Algeria on the successful launch of the Alsat-3A Earth observation satellite, calling it a significant milestone for Africa's space and geospatial capabilities. The satellite is expected to provide high-resolution imagery to support a range of applications, from environmental monitoring to disaster risk management.
Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, praised Algeria’s leadership in space science, noting that the achievement reflects the country’s commitment to using satellite technology for sustainable development and informed policymaking. "This milestone underscores Algeria’s dedication to advancing space capabilities that can benefit not only national but also continental priorities,” Youssouf said.
The Alsat-3A satellite is anticipated to generate data that will aid in implementing the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the African Space Policy and Strategy, supporting initiatives such as climate monitoring, agriculture planning, and urban development.
The African Union Commission also highlighted the strong spirit of international collaboration in the project, emphasizing that Algeria’s investment in the peaceful use of outer space strengthens Africa’s collective progress in science and technology.
