Washington (diplomat.so) - The United States has reimposed financial restrictions on Cuban military- and government-linked entities, reversing recent moves to ease sanctions. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the reinstatement of the "Cuba Restricted List," prohibiting transactions with entities tied to the Cuban military, intelligence, or security sectors.
The decision comes after the Biden administration had lifted the restricted list and eased measures, including removing Cuba from a terrorism blacklist. President Trump has since reinstated these sanctions, signaling a stricter approach toward the island nation.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez criticized the move, calling it "unjustifiable" and warning of increased hardships for the Cuban people. The renewed sanctions also target Orbit S.A., a company authorized to process remittances, potentially affecting money transfers between Cuban-Americans and their families.

Meanwhile, Cuba has stalled the release of over 500 prisoners, initially agreed upon in a deal with the Vatican after Biden's sanction relief in January, leaving the agreement in uncertainty as U.S.-Cuba relations remain tense.
