Kampala (Diplomat.so) - The Acting Foreign Minister and State Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, H.E. Mr. Ali Mohamed Omar, addressed the Ministerial Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement taking place today in the Ugandan capital, Kampala.
Somalia's Acting Foreign Minister, H.E. Mr. Ali Mohamed Omar, commended Uganda for assuming leadership of the NAM until 2027 and expressed gratitude for their commitment to fostering unity and cooperation among member states.

H.E. Mr. Ali Omar underscored Somalia's longstanding commitment to the principles of the Non-Aligned Movement, emphasizing the nation's dedication to upholding international law, political independence, and territorial integrity in the face of evolving global challenges.

The Acting Foreign Minister drew attention to a pressing matter concerning a recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the Prime Minister of Ethiopia with a regional leader in northern Somalia. He deemed this act a violation of international law and the fundamental principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity, posing a threat to the stability of not just Somalia but the entire Horn of Africa region.

H.E. Mr.  Ali Omar urged the NAM to stand in solidarity against actions that undermine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of member states, emphasizing the collective responsibility to maintain the security and stability built over decades.

The Foreign Minister also addressed the ongoing crisis in Gaza, Palestine, condemning Israel's actions as war crimes. Somalia commended South Africa for bringing the matter to the International Court of Justice and expressed solidarity with the people of Gaza.

In concluding his speech, H.E. Mr. Ali Mohamed Omar invoked the vision of the Non-Aligned Movement's founding fathers, calling for unity and commitment to protect the political independence and territorial integrity of each member state. He urged fellow members to stand together to ensure the NAM remains a powerful force for peace, stability, and cooperation in an increasingly interconnected world.

The Non-Aligned Movement, representing nations aspiring to chart their own course free from major power blocs, now faces the challenge of addressing regional violations and promoting the shared principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Ministerial Meeting continues with a renewed focus on preserving the principles that form the foundation of the Non-Aligned Movement.
