Dubai (Diplomat.so) - U.S. Central Command said the USS George Washington Carrier Strike Group began operating in the Middle East on Thursday, August 20, after arriving in the region Wednesday.
CENTCOM said the deployment was scheduled, with U.S. Navy imagery showing sailors working on the flight deck as the nuclear-powered USS George Washington transited the Arabian Sea. The carrier is expected to relieve the USS Abraham Lincoln, whose unusually long deployment has drawn scrutiny over crew welfare and operational strain.

"The George Washington Carrier Strike Group is operating in Middle East during a scheduled deployment after arriving in the CENTCOM theater yesterday,” CENTCOM said in its announcement.

The arrival marks a significant rotation of U.S. naval forces during continuing tensions with Iran. The George Washington, normally forward-deployed in Japan, moved west after operating in the Indo-Pacific, temporarily reducing the U.S. carrier presence there as Washington maintains substantial naval forces in the Middle East.

The USS Abraham Lincoln departed San Diego in November 2025 and was later redirected toward the Middle East to support U.S. military operations connected to the conflict with Iran. The carrier has spent more than 250 days deployed and more than 200 consecutive days without a port visit, according to congressional correspondence and U.S. military reporting.

Democratic lawmakers have sought information from the Pentagon about the prolonged deployment and reports involving shortages, maintenance pressures and sailors’ well-being. Senator Richard Blumenthal wrote to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao on August 12, raising concerns about the effects of extended carrier deployments on personnel, maintenance and fleet readiness.

CENTCOM commander Admiral Brad Cooper, who recently visited the Lincoln, praised the crew’s performance and resilience. Cooper said the ship had recorded the lowest number of mental-health cases among the Navy’s 11 aircraft carriers and credited commanders with prioritizing sailors’ welfare.

The Navy has separately disputed suggestions of a worsening mental-health crisis aboard the vessel, saying it had not identified an increase in reported suicidal ideation or suicide attempts. Medical, religious and mental-health personnel remain available to the crew, officials said.

Hegseth has also rejected descriptions of deteriorating conditions aboard the Lincoln, saying reports had "completely misrepresented” the situation. President Donald Trump similarly dismissed concerns that the deployment had lasted excessively long.

The Lincoln carries roughly 5,000 sailors and Marines. Diplomat News Network’s review of official statements and congressional correspondence shows the controversy extends beyond conditions aboard one ship, raising broader questions about personnel endurance and the Navy’s ability to sustain prolonged carrier operations.

The George Washington’s arrival provides the Pentagon with a fresh carrier force in the Middle East, but the rotation also highlights the competing demands facing the U.S. Navy as it balances commitments in the Middle East and Indo-Pacific.
