Ramallah (diplomat.so) - On Sunday, the Israeli military conducted demolitions in the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank, resulting in the destruction of multiple structures. The Palestinian state news agency reported that approximately 20 buildings were leveled during the operation.
Footage from the scene depicted a series of simultaneous explosions in the densely populated camp, with thick clouds of smoke rising above the city. The Israeli military stated that 23 structures were "dismantled" after uncovering explosives laboratories, weapons, and observation posts. Images shared by the military showcased firearms, ammunition, and gas canisters, though specific locations were not disclosed.
Dr. Wisam Baker, Director of Jenin Government Hospital, reported that part of the hospital sustained damage in the explosions; however, no casualties were recorded.
The Jenin refugee camp, established for Palestinians displaced during the 1948 Arab-Israeli conflict, has been a focal point of militant activity and has experienced multiple Israeli military operations over the years. The current operation, initiated on January 21, involves Israeli forces supported by helicopters and armored bulldozers, targeting militant groups and weapons stockpiles.
The United Nations' agency for Palestinian refugees has reported that nearly all of the camp's 20,000 residents have been displaced over the past two months due to ongoing military activities.
Since the commencement of the operation, at least 25 Palestinians have been killed, including nine members of armed groups, a 73-year-old man, and a two-year-old girl, according to Palestinian officials. The Israeli military reports that it has killed at least 35 militants and detained over 100 individuals.
In a related incident on Sunday, a 27-year-old man was reported killed by Israeli forces during a raid on a refugee camp near Hebron.
The situation in Jenin and the broader West Bank remains tense, with ongoing military operations and significant humanitarian concerns.
