Tehran (diplomat.so) - An Iranian soldier reportedly opened fire on fellow soldiers in the southeastern city of Kerman, leading to the death of five individuals, as per Iranian state TV.
The incident transpired within a barracks dormitory, where the assailant, yet to be identified, discharged his weapon upon resting soldiers. Authorities have not yet revealed a discernible motive, and the suspect remains at large. Detailed information about the perpetrator and the circumstances surrounding the attack is currently unavailable.

Kerman, situated approximately 830 kilometers (515 miles) southeast of Tehran, had recently experienced a devastating bombing attack earlier this month. The attack claimed the lives of 94 people and left hundreds wounded during a commemorative ceremony for an Iranian general who had been killed in a 2020 U.S. drone strike in Iraq. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the explosions.

Incidents of this nature, though infrequent, have been reported at military bases in Iran. Notably, in 2022, another soldier took the lives of a fellow soldier and three policemen at a roadside police station in the country's south.

It is crucial to note that military service, lasting up to 24 months, is mandatory for men aged 19 and above in Iran. The authorities are actively investigating the recent shooting incident to ascertain the motive and identify the perpetrator.
