Kampala (diplomat.so) - The U.S. Envoy to the Horn of Africa, Mike Hammer, expressed deep concern over "troubling indications" that the militant group al-Shabaab is exploiting the Illegal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Ethiopia and the Somaliland administration of the North-Western Region of Somalia to recruit new fighters.
Speaking at Thursday's IGAD Summit in Kampala, Hammer emphasized the potential disruption to the collective efforts against al-Shabaab due to escalating tensions surrounding the MoU. He stated, "We are particularly concerned that the increasing tension over the MoU threatens to disrupt the fight that Somalis, along with Africans, and regional and international partners, including the U.S., are waging against al-Shabaab."
The envoy urged cooperation among stakeholders to address the challenges posed by al-Shabaab's alleged manipulation of the MoU, emphasizing the need for a united front in the ongoing battle against the extremist group in the region.
