Puntland SIEIT urges to comply quota of women
Garowe, Puntland State, Somalia ( DIPLOMAT.SO) – Puntland State Indirect Electoral Implementation Team (SIEIT) held a press conference today in Garowe to urge Puntland clan elders to comply with the 30 per cent quota for women’s representation in the Lower House of the country’s next federal parliament.
Puntland SIEIT Chairman Khalif Aw-Ali said the seats of those clans who fail to comply with the women’s representation quota will be suspended until a final decision on their status is made by the SIEIT and the Puntland state government.
On 19 September, UNSOM attended an event in Garowe organised by the Talo-wadaag (Common Cause Movement) and Bayan youth umbrella organizations to encourage the participation of women and young people in the upcoming electoral process. The meeting, which was attended by women and youth groups, discussed ways of ensuring greater women and youth participation in the run up to the electoral process. Speakers at the event said the main challenges facing Somali youth include financial, cultural and mobilization issues. Among the participants were goodwill ambassadors appointed by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to promote the 30 per cent parliamentary quota for women and some members of the Puntland SIEIT.
