Nouakchott, Mauritania (Xinhua + DIPLOMAT.SO) – Mauritania has condemned violence witnessed at the Saudi Arabia Embassy in Iran following the execution of a Shiite cleric by Sunni-dominated Saudi Arabia, a source from Mauritania’s foreign ministry said on Tuesday.

“The Islamic Republic of Mauritania condemns the riots perpetrated against diplomatic missions of the Saudi Arabia Kingdom in the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the statement said.

“Respect for sovereignty and the obligation of non-interference in the internal affairs of other states remains fundamental principles of international law and diplomatic relations,” the statement concluded.

Mauritania, a Muslim country that is 100 percent Sunni, enjoys good relations with Saudi Arabia which is one of its biggest donors.
