#Kenya : 5,800 tents for #Somali refugees
Nairobi , Kenya ( Agencies + DIPLOMAT.SO) – Kenya has received a donation of 5,800 tents from the People’s Republic of China to help boost the voluntary repatriation of Somali refugees back to Somalia.
Speaking after she received the donation, Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs Amb. Monica Juma said that only 6,000 refugees have been repatriated with the assistance of the UNHCR.
She added that another close to 70,000 refugees have spontaneously repatriated to Somalia.
The PS said lack of basic infrastructure like shelter, water, heath facilities and schooling has slowed the repatriation process.
“We were very pleased in the last donor conference, we saw a pledge of USD105 million to support the establishment of basic infrastructure so that our friends and neighbors in Somalia do not return to a place with no services,” she said.
She noted that the Somali refugee crisis is a burden that should be shared internationally, saying although the crisis has been going on for a long time there has been a strong support from international community.
China Ambassador to Kenya Mr. Liu Xianfa said that the good relationship between the two countries has motivated them to chip in and support the repatriation process.
Last month, Interior CS Major Gen. (Rtd.) Joseph Nkaissery released records showing that 45,000 refugees were repatriated in the last two years from the Dadaab Refugee Camp.
Over the years, Somali refugees trickled into the country due to war and famine. Their population here has grown to an estimated 350,000 people, more than half the population of the entire refugee community in Kenya. For more news and stories, join us on Facebook,Twitter , or contact us through our Email: firstname.lastname@example.org, email@example.com
