Police : Gunmen take bank manager’s family hostage in northern #France
Paris ( Agencies + DIPLOMAT.SO) – Gunmen held a French bank manager’s family hostage for hours before a SWAT team fatally shot one captor and arrested another Tuesday, police said.
No connections immediately emerged between the hostage standoff and the terrorist attacks on Paris earlier this month.
A group armed with Kalashnikovs stormed the manager’s house in the northern town of Roubaix and tried to force him to open the bank’s safe, local prosecutor Frederic Fevre told Agence France-Presse.
The manager ran out of the house when police arrived, so the attackers took his wife, the couple’s daughter and their 1-year-old baby captive, Fevre said. One of the assailants fired on the officers, who fired back. A police tactical unit raided the home about two hours later.
The officers freed the hostages, shot one of the gunmen dead and captured one of them in a garden behind the home, according to AFP. An unknown number of the suspects fled the scene.
Fevre called the attempted heist a “criminal operation” and said investigators don’t believe there are any links to terrorism.
Belgium and France stayed on high alert Tuesday after the Nov. 13 attacks killed 130 people and authorities kept up the search for suspects. Roubaix is about 60 miles west of Brussels, which has been under lockdown orders for the past five days. For more news and stories, join us on Facebook,Twitter , or contact us through our Email: firstname.lastname@example.org, email@example.com
