Ethiopia to become second most populace country in Africa
Addis Ababa ( ENA + DIPLOMAT.SO) – The population of Ethiopia would approach 90 million in this year, Ethiopian Central Statistical Agency (CSE) disclosed.
During a press conference CSE Public Vital Statistics Sector Interim Deputy Director, Asalefew Abera, held today the population of the Ethiopia was 87.9 million last year.
After 30 years the population of Ethiopia is expected to reach 136.7 million, which would make the country the second most populace country after Nigeria, he added.
The 2.6 annual population growth has declined to 2.4, and this is healthy as it is consistent with the economic growth of the country, he stated.
The report released was prepared in cooperation with United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), ministries and NGOs.
The second most populous country in Africa, at 77.1 million in 2007, the population of Ethiopia has experienced steady growth over the years, from 53.4 million in 1994 to 63.5 million in 2000. At an average annual increase of 2.8 per cent, growth is sustained by high fertility levels and declining mortality.
The purpose of the Population and Development Strategies (PDS) sub-programme is to contribute to ensuring that population and gender issues are addressed systematically within the framework of development policies, programmes and processes, on the basis of reliable population data. For more news and stories, join us on Facebook,Twitter , or contact us through our Email: firstname.lastname@example.org, email@example.com
