Lebanon appeals for international support in the fight against ISIS
Beirut ( Agencies + DIPLOMAT.SO) – The fight against terrorism is being waged by Lebanon on behalf of the world, Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil said Sunday, while lobbying for international support.
In comments made during the 15th Francophone Summit in Dakar, the foreign minister called on the international community to “assist Lebanon, which is waging a war in their name and in the name of all of humanity against inhumane phenomenon.”
According to a statement released by his news office, Bassil said that Lebanon’s response to ISIS was characterized by widespread military presence to uproot manifestations of the group.
“The long-term strategy to [fight ISIS] focuses on international judicial cooperation so that the barbaric perpetrators are not permitted to evade justice,” Bassil said, adding that the same integrated efforts would also work to reform education and sway youth away from extremism.
While calling for support, Gebran Bassil noted that Lebanon was at the heart of the regional storm.
“Our country is facing the most dangerous existential crisis in its recent history,” he added.
The Lebanese delegation headed by Bassil proposed a number of amendments be introduced to the draft resolution to be adopted at the end of the summit. The main recommendation concerned the fact that Lebanon was not originally listed as one of the francophone countries undergoing a crisis, the state-run National News Agency reported Sunday.
The delegation suggested the introduction of a number of paragraphs pertaining to threats against Lebanon’s stability, security and territorial integrity, the need for military support to addresst them and the negative repercussions the Syrian crisis has had on Lebanon.
With respect to the draft resolution on terrorism, the Lebanese delegation insisted on inserting a paragraph condemning all perpetrators who carry out terrorist acts, particularly ISIS and The Nusra Front.
Bassil stressed on the need to take necessary measures to ensure that terror-related crimes are referred to competent courts in an effort to end impunity. For more news and stories, join us on Facebook,Twitter , or contact us through our Email: email@example.com, firstname.lastname@example.org
