Lionel Messi beats Cristiano Ronaldo to Raúl González record
Amsterdam ( Agencies + DIPLOMAT.SO) – Lionel Messi has beaten Cristiano Ronaldo to the Champions League goals record held by Real Madrid icon Raúl González with his double for Barcelona at Ajax on Wednesday night.
Messi headed home a Marc Bartra cross in the first half to draw level with Cristiano Ronaldo on 70 Champions League strikes and added another in the second period to tie with former Madrid captain Raul on 71 goals in Europe’s premier club competition.
Ronaldo missed a golden opportunity to pip Messi to the record as he failed to score in Madrid’s 1-0 win over Liverpool at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday.
But the Argentine was not to be denied and headed Barca in front after Ajax goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen had come rushing off his line and Bartra squared for Messi to steer the ball into the empty net.
Messi then scored again in the second half to draw level with Raul as he slid home from close range after playing a one-two with Pedro.
The 27-year-old has now netted 71 times in 90 games for Barcelona in the Champions League, while Ronaldo has scored his 70 in 106 matches. Raul needed 142 appearances to reach 71 strikes. For more news and stories, join us on Facebook,Twitter , or contact us through our Email: firstname.lastname@example.org, email@example.com
