After shock Albania defeat , Portugal coach Paulo Bento leavs
Lisbon (Agencies + DIPLOMAT.SO)- Paulo Bento has stepped down as head coach of Portugal by mutual consent.
The 45-year-old has agreed for his contract to be terminated following the Seleccao’s shock 1-0 home defeat to Albania in their opening Euro 2016 qualifying clash.
The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) confirmed the news on Thursday but gave no date by which a replacement will be announced.
“We appreciate all that Paulo Bento did for the Seleccao, particularly in getting Portugal to Euro 2012 and World Cup 2014.
“The FPF is already working on a structured solution to address our team and that will be known soon.
“Thanks again to Paulo Bento.”
Bento, who made 35 appearances for the senior Portugal side as a player, took over as head coach in 2010 after Carlos Queiroz endured a miserable start to the qualifying campaign for Euro 2012.
He ultimately guided Portugal to the semi-finals of the tournament in Poland and Ukraine, where they lost on penalties to eventual winners Spain.
The Seleccao struggled at this summer’s World Cup, however, as they exited at the group stage following a heavy defeat to Germany, a draw with USA and a narrow win over Ghana.
Cristiano Ronaldo was missing through injury as Portugal were stunned by Albania on Sunday – a result that ultimately led to Bento’s exit. For more news and stories, join us on Facebook,Twitter , or contact us through our Email: email@example.com, firstname.lastname@example.org
