Somali Lawmaker Shot Dead in Drive-by Shooting
Mogadishu (AP + VOA+DIPLOMAT)- A Somali police official says gunmen have killed a Somali lawmaker in a drive-by shooting in the Somali capital, Mogadishu.
Capt. Mohamed Hussein said Wednesday that Saado Ali Warsame, who also was a popular singer of Somali folk music, was shot dead by gunmen who pulled up near her car as she was being driven to a hotel.
He said Warsame’s driver was also killed in the attack which took place in Mogadishu’s Hodan district, considered to be one of the safest places in the seaside city because of heavy security presence.
No group has immediately claimed the responsibility for the attack, but the militant group al-Shabab frequently carries out similar attacks against lawmakers, government officials and foreigners.
Warsame is the fourth lawmaker killed in attacks this year.
A government official tells VOA’s Somali Service that Saado Ali Warsame was killed Wednesday near the Ambassador Hotel. A witness who saw her body says gunmen shot her several times in the chest, then fled.
Warsame was formerly based in the U.S. city of Minneapolis. In 2012 she returned to Somalia and became a member of the new parliament.
The group claimed responsibility for the shooting death of lawmaker Mohamed Mohamud Hayd earlier this month and the killings of two other parliament members in April.
Somalia’s internationally-backed government has struggled to stabilize the country in the face of continued al-Shabab activity. The al-Qaida-linked militant group has attacked the presidential palace twice this year and has blocked roads to government-controlled towns, contributing to local food shortages. For more news and stories, join us on Facebook,Twitter , or contact us through our Email: email@example.com, firstname.lastname@example.org
